Transcranial electrical stimulation – what it is and who it can help

Among the questions that patients ask me more and more often, one stands out in particular: "Doctor, is there a way to help the brain recover - without drugs?" It is precisely on this track that I want to introduce you today to a method that in clinical practice delights me again and again with its possibilities - transcranial electrical stimulation.

What is transcranial electrical stimulation?

Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) is a non-invasive method that delivers a weak electrical current to targeted areas of the brain through electrodes placed on the surface of the head. The most commonly used form is transcranial direct current stimulation, known by the abbreviation tDCS ( transcranial direct current stimulation ). The current we use is extremely low – usually between 1 and 2 milliamperes – and is completely painless. Patients usually feel only a slight tingling or warmth at the electrode site during the treatment.

How it affects the brain

The principle of operation is based on the modulation of neuronal activity. Anodal stimulation (positive electrode) increases the excitability of neurons in the target area, while cathodal stimulation (negative electrode) reduces this excitability. In this way, we can influence the balance of brain activity – stimulate areas that are insufficiently active or calm those that are overstimulated. It is important to note that tDCS does not cause the activation of neurons per se, but changes their excitability threshold, making them more or less ready for activation. It is precisely this subtlety that makes this method safe and well tolerated.

In what conditions can it help?

In my practice, I use transcranial stimulation as part of a broader treatment plan for a variety of neurological and neuropsychiatric conditions. It has been particularly useful for chronic pain conditions such as tension-type headaches and migraines, where stimulation of the motor cortex can help alleviate symptoms. In patients with depressive disorders, stimulation of the prefrontal cortex can improve mood and cognitive function. This method is also used in neurorehabilitation after stroke, where it helps restore motor and speech functions. Research also shows promising results for insomnia, anxiety, and difficulties with concentration and memory.

What does the treatment look like?

The procedure itself is simple and comfortable. The patient sits in a relaxed position while soft, sponge-like electrodes soaked in saline are placed on specific areas of the head. The treatment usually lasts 20 to 30 minutes, during which time you can read or simply sit quietly. Most patients need a series of 10 to 15 treatments for optimal results, depending on their condition and individual response. It is important to note that the effect is not immediate after a single treatment – it is cumulative, meaning that the improvement gradually builds over the number of sessions.

An integrated approach gives the best results

As with any treatment in integrative medicine , transcranial stimulation is not a magic solution on its own. I achieve the best results when I combine it with other methods – for example, nutritional therapy that ensures the brain has all the nutrients it needs to recover, acupuncture that additionally regulates energy pathways, or targeted neurological monitoring that shows us objective progress. Each patient receives an individually tailored protocol, because no two brains are identical or two conditions are identical.

If you are interested in whether transcranial electrical stimulation can help you, please feel free to contact us for a consultation . A conversation is always the first step towards better understanding your condition and finding the best approach.
