What is integrative medicine and why are more and more patients choosing it?

One of the most common questions I hear in the office is: "Doctor, is there anything I can do in addition to my regular therapy?" This question is, in fact, the core of integral medicine — an approach that does not reject what classical medicine offers, but rather complements and deepens it.

Integrative medicine is not a replacement — it is an upgrade

When I say that I practice integral medicine, I sometimes encounter a misunderstanding. Some patients think this means giving up conventional therapy. Quite the opposite. In my office, neurological diagnostics — EEG (electroencephalography, recording of brain activity), EMNG (electroneuromyography, a test that measures the work of nerves and muscles), clinical examination — forms the basis of every approach. Integral medicine simply means that in addition to this foundation, I also use methods that are proven to improve the patient's overall condition.

What does it look like in practice?

Imagine a patient who comes in with a chronic headache. A neurological examination and diagnosis are the first step — we need to rule out serious causes. But if the headache turns out to be the result of long-term stress, neck muscle tension, or poor sleep, then a neurological examination alone is not enough to fully improve the condition.

This is where I start to think more broadly. Maybe the patient benefits from acupuncture to relax muscles and reduce pain. Maybe manual therapy helps resolve blockages in the cervical spine. Maybe a nutritional analysis shows that certain micronutrients that affect the functioning of the nervous system are lacking. It is this combination — classical neurology and complementary methods — that produces results that a purely conventional approach sometimes cannot achieve alone.

The methods I use and why

Over the years of work, I have developed an approach that includes several complementary methods, each of which I choose according to the patient's individual needs:

Nutritional therapy is based on a diet analysis and targeted nutritional supplements. Neurotransmitters (chemical messengers in the brain) such as serotonin and dopamine are directly dependent on the nutrients we consume through food. When necessary, I recommend targeted nutritional supplements that support the functioning of the nervous system.

Acupuncture is a method I use for chronic pain, insomnia and stress-related conditions. In combination with neurological therapy, many patients report a significant improvement in quality of life.

Manual therapy helps with problems that have their roots in the musculoskeletal system and are manifested by neurological symptoms such as tingling, pain, or numbness.

Homeopathy and apitherapy (therapy with bee products) are part of the approach for patients who want to complement their therapy with natural methods.

Why do patients seek this approach?

In my practice, I see more and more patients who come because they want to be active participants in their own health care. They don't just want to receive a prescription — they want to understand what's going on in their bodies and what they can do for themselves. Integrative medicine makes that possible. It puts the patient at the center and looks at them as a whole, not just as a set of symptoms.

Often, patients tell me, “This is the first time anyone has asked me how I sleep, what I eat, and how I feel—not just where I hurt.” That conversation, that whole picture, is the key to a good approach.

Practical advice for getting started

If you're considering a holistic approach to your health, start simple: keep a short diary of your symptoms for two weeks. Write down when they occur, what you ate, how you slept, and how you were feeling that day. This information is extremely valuable during your first visit and helps me work with you to create a plan that is tailored to your specific needs.

If you recognize yourself in this or have questions about how an integral approach can help in your case, feel free to contact us for a consultation — a conversation is always the first step.
